This course provided students with the knowledge and practical experience necessary to develop skills in the acquisition, management, conversion, analysis, and creation of spatial data, an integral part of the development and implementation of geographic information systems. Topics included acquisition of existing data sets, data format conversion, georeferencing, vector digitizing from maps, address matching, and acquisition of data from remote sensing sources and the global positioning system (GPS).

Participants should have taken the Introduction to GIS course or had equivalent training or experience.

Workshop format: approximately 50% lecture, 50% hands on training via guided lab exercises completed individually on computers.

Objectives:

By attending this course, participants:

1.  Developed an understanding of the acquisition and creation of digital spatial data.

During the course, participants practiced:

1.  Creating digital spatial data using ArcGIS functionality, including georeferencing, spatial adjustment, vector digitizing, data attributing, and address matching.

2.  Importing, converting and formating spatial data from existing sources for use in a GIS project.

3.  Documenting data to support sharing and appropriate use of the data.

This workshop was one of the core courses in a larger GIS curriculum. To see how the workshop fits into the curriculum, as well as information on other courses in the series, please visit:
